SETTLING IN TO THE DARK HEART OF GLOBAL CIVILIZATION

The House and I had just settled in:1
they as trustees of a process
set in motion a hundred years before;
me as a foot soldier in a process
I barely understood
and the whole scene
began to get more and more violent,
aggressive, anti-social, Rolling Stones,
assassinations, TV war, Stanley Kubrick's
A Clockwork Orange. Then I started
teaching school and that world exploded
with disruptive behaviour
in bits-and-pieces, slowly, day-to-day,
seductively, then, like a landslide,
mind expanding drugs, extremist cultism:
they were the darkest hours before the dawn.
1 we had both 'settled in' by the mid-1960s.
