Learning Php

I have done some work with Perl and a good amount with asp.net. I'm looking at learning php to create a database backed web site. I have a couple of questions before my book arives in the mail. How well does php interact with MySql? What other languages is it comparable to, like perl and asp or asp.net?

I've not used any of those other languages you mention, but I have used php a great deal. We find php to continually deliver.
