Yahoo! Directory

Ok so I'm paying 299.00USD per year for this (per site) and I have not been displeased.

I have a few of these options running and the sites get plenty plenty of Yahoo! Directory coverage.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else uses the servise, or if not are you covered well in the Yahoo Directory?

Is it worth the cash?

Watch out because Yahoo may rate Pay Per Click sites higher soon.

Now that Overture has been rebranded be Yahoo. Ref: http://www.content.overture.com/d/

299 at a half a dollar per click equates to about 600 clicks.

Do you get more clicks from a PAID Directory listing?

How does it compare with un-paid natural organic listings?

Yeah 600 clicks at half a buck, the site(s) in question get a ton more than that per year from yahoo, per day probably. And they also are probably in that bid range.

I'm also aware there is a significant difference between two VERY similar sites, one with paid directory placement and one without. The one without is nowhere near the other in terms of Yahoo coverage.

Based on this I'd have to say it was worth it.

Though would of course like another user of the same service to have an opinion.

Yes the click bidding Overture change of ownership is interesting, I also use that. We have a thread here for that:

I guess we may re-name that soon.

when I took over the two websites at my job, I was also put in charge of getting them traffic. I knew nothing about seo or sem, and It took me a few months to figure out. I relized that by putting your site in the yahoo directory, you are giving them control over your title and description. It took me about 3 months to get the site out of the yahoo directory, and with in a month after getting out of there, it went from page 2 or 3, to page 1 or 2 for respective keywords. This may just be a fluke, but I had a strong feeling about it before I got out of yahoo, and I seem to have been correct with that site.

I can see yahoo adjusting there algorithim to weight sites that are included in there directory higher than sites that aren't. They may even be doing this now, to an extent, but with the case of my sites - not being listed helps. So don't pay money and you can do better, that's the great thing about america icon_smile.gif

This section interests me as I have experiened the absolute opposite effect.. i.e. going from off-page to 1 and 2 for main keywords.

I guess we need more opinion.

Let me eloborate on my expirence, I had two sites, of approx. equal age online. Site A was around a little longer, is in dmoz.org, was in yahoo directory, and had a better link popularity, than site B. Site B wasn't in dmoz.org, never was in yahoo directory.

Both sites are going for similar keywords, one phrase in particular. Site A was on page 3 to 4 in Yahoo depending on the day, and Site B was in Page 2 to 3. So Site B was in a better position than Site A, and I looked to see what could cause this, and when you are in the Yahoo directory, they can control your title and description. I had a pretty well written title and description, used my keywords, but didn't spam them. Yahoo turned that into a 5 word description, which was hardly a good description.

It took me some time to get it out of the directory, and then two days after it was out, I shot to the top, I'm now currently in position 2 for that keyword. This could be a fluke, or it could just be that they weight the description heavily, and with a weak description, I had a less than desirable placement, and was paying for it.

You are right though, get some more feedback on this, this is just my own expirence.

I guess the question you need to know is if yahoo DOES use the description as a weighting factor or not, I have my doubts.

Yes, come on people let's hear from some more people on this.

You're correct, I don't really know for sure if they do. I do however assume they do, because once I was out of there directory, I moved up in the serps. Assuming that they weight the fact that I was in there directory as a positive thing, then once I'm out, I would have lost that weight. Then gaining something in weight in the fact that I now had control over my description. I don't know if there was something else that could have caused it though, but from what I've seen, Yahoo does weight the description. I'll do some controlled testing to see if they do for sure, or as sure as I can be.
