New Year resolutions fitness and finance top the scales

Personal finance is one of the top New Year resolutions among Britons

London, 27th December, 2006: As the New Year trots along, more than 16 million adults are set to make new resolutions according to research on Tuesday from financial Web site Unbiased.co.uk.

Britons seem to be dealing with weighty problems with a quarter of them wishing to shed some pounds. Losing weight or improving diet tops the list with personal finance coming a close second.

More than 21 percent plan to get their financial affairs in order. But just 11 percent are thinking about getting a foothold on the property ladder, as affordability worsens, and 9 percent are considering sorting out their pension. Among those questioned, 43 percent hope to curb their spending habit. A sizeable chunk, 38 percent to be exact, intends to pay back outstanding debts and 34 percent want to save for specific purposes, such as car or holiday.

However, if last year’s trends are anything to go by, people are not likely to stick to their resolutions for too long. More than half of those who made resolutions at the end of 2005 broke their pledge within the first six months of 2006. And that’s not all; more than 2.2 million lacked the resolve to stick to their decision for more than a day.
