Self-sustaining DSA with UV LED’s sterilizes water

Contributed by amontef on Wednesday, March 30 @ 09:39:45 EST

The self-sustaining Dynamic Sterilizing Apparatus (DSA) uses Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diodes (UV LED’s) to irradiate water-borne pathogens.

2005 not only marked a new year, but a breakthrough in technology as well. An Ohio team has been in the process of conducting flow-through water purification benchmark testing, since February of this year, with the use of UV LED’s and their patent pending self-sustaining technology.

The smaller LED devices have more advantages over the mercury vapor lamps such as durability, life expectancy, and use of less heat and power. The self-sustaining technology will eliminate the need for any outside energy force to operate the device.

OHT, LLC, an Ohio startup company, has designed and developed a novel prototype that will allow the flow of water to be treated by the 16 MEmocvd™ AIGaN/GaN LED chips, emitting at 270 nm range, made by the South Carolina based firm Sensor Electronic Technology (SET).

The first battery of tests was conducted using non-filtered raw sewage fecal matter at the influent side at a local wastewater treatment facility. The influent samples of fecal coliform bacteria were reduced by 60% after a one-second flow through process. The tests were conducted with a 6gpm flow rate through the device. Tri State Laboratory conducted third party testing on the samples. The test results that followed since have provided proof of the basic viability and instant kill efficiency of the LED’s.

“We wanted to start with the worst possible water conditions we could find. We feel we achieved tremendous results at this level and know that we are on the cutting edge of improving water purification,” said Damien Lieggi, CEO and Chief Innovator.

OHT, LLC has been in collaborations with Great Lakes Industrial Technology Center (Glitec) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Glenn Research Center (GRC).

The technology will reduce the problems facing the current procedures for water purification. The high costs of chlorine can be reduced or eliminated, along with the by-products that it produces.

The goal in mind for OHT, LLC was to design a technology that would be safe to the environment, cost efficient, economically sustainable, and global in use. OHT, LLC knows that the future of society depends upon the usage of clean and viable technology in today’s world.
