As 110 teachers, psychologists, children’s authors and other experts call on the British Government to help prevent the death of childhood, part of the answer is already in existence.
AQUILA sticks to three major principals that would please those experts who say our young people are being raised in a ‘toxic and pretty scary’ world:
1. No advertising – we all worry about the influence of advertising on the young. By refusing advertising, AQUILA gives children the freedom to be children, without making appeals to their pocket money or allowing them to be exposed to inappropriate messages.
2. Fun – for many families there is a dilemma about recreation; children being pushed hard at school need relaxation time, but parents don’t want their children’s limited free hours wasted watching cartoons or playing computer games. AQUILA provides lively non-academic articles and activities that inspire children to read, think, act and respond.
3. Responsiveness - children contact the magazine regularly and their views are built into the editorial process. They contribute articles, take part in competitions and add chapters to a continuing story as well as sending poems and pictures for publication. This child-led approach means children use their imaginations to help shape their own publication. Because AQUILA is international and multi-cultural, children have the opportunity to find pen-pals around the world. On the letters page they debate environmental issues and bullying, as well as telling jokes and sharing experiences -all of which adds to the complex, fun and child-focused material that makes AQUILA unique, and an invaluable contribution to childhood.
AQUILA is available by subscription only and details can be found on our website at http://www.aquila.co.uk or by telephoning + (0)1323 431313. The magazine makes an ideal gift for an enquiring child, and works with home-schooling strategies to enhance both school and home based teaching and learning.
