California College San Diego Announces Its Accredited Respiratory Therapy Degree

California College San Diego - An accredited college since 1978 adds Respiratory Therapy Degree Programs in the list of healthcare degree programs currently offered.

San Diego, CA, May 14, 2009 – California College San Diego (CCSD) has recently added an accredited Associate and Bachelor of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy to its comprehensive line-up of healthcare programs. Respiratory Therapy is a specific field of healthcare. Respiratory Therapists and technicians assess, treat, and monitor patients with cardiopulmonary (heart/lung) illnesses and breathing difficulties. This type of therapy determines a patients' lung capacity, oxygen levels in the blood, and other data through the use of diagnostic testing and equipment. This information is then used to diagnose patients and treat them.

To be eligible for the Associate and Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy, students must possess a HS Diploma/GED. For the BSRT, students are allowed to transfer in entry-level RT coursework, or start toward their degree with no previous education. All students need to go through a campus interview and must complete the enrollment agreement and go through financial aid to declare how they are financing their education. The college also offers assistance on financial aid, free of cost. All students are required to attend an orientation program prior to starting classes (which begin at the start of every month).

CCSD’s Associate of Science Degree in Respiratory Therapy can be completed in as little as 22 months. This program offers a comprehensive curriculum, modern equipment, small class sizes, and individual attention from qualified instructors. It combines classroom theory, laboratory experience, and clinical practice in respiratory patient care. Course work includes General Anatomy and Physiology, Cardiopulmonary and Renal Anatomy & Physiology, Patient Assessment/Electrocardiography, Introduction to Respiratory Therapy/Infection Control, Medical Gases/Aerosol & Humidity Therapy, Lung Expansion Therapy/Bronchial Hygiene, Arterial Blood Gases/Applied Cardiopulmonary Physiology, Respiratory Therapy Care Sciences, Advanced Pulmonary Function Testing, Adult Pathophysiology, Pulmonary Rehabilitation/Alternative Site Care, Mechanical Ventilation I – Theory, Mechanical Ventilation II – Application, Pediatric/Perinatal Pathophysiology and Critical Care, Advanced Cardiopulmonary, Resuscitation and Advanced Skills, Application of Cardiopulmonary Diagnostics and Monitoring, Clinical Experience I and II, and Airway Management/Basic CPR. The program prepares students for possible certifications in NBRC eligibility for RRT examination; Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license.

The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy Degree prepares students to meet the clinical and management challenges in this fast-growing field. The curriculum emphasizes Cardiac & Renal Anatomy & Physiology, Cardiopulmonary Pharmacology, Pulmonary Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology & Decontamination, Airway Management, Medical Gas Therapy, Lung Hyperinflation Therapy, Arterial Blood Gases, Advanced Cardiopulmonary Physiology, Pulmonary Function Testing, Introduction to Polysomnography, Respiratory Care Protocols, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Mechanical Ventilation Management, Perinatal and Pediatric Care, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Aerosol and Humidity-Pulmonary Hygiene, The Healthcare System, Management Principles, Management Planning Principles, Psychology of Motivation, Business Law, and Organization Design and Change. A BSRT prepares students for possible certifications and credentials in: National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) eligibility. State licensure includes Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) Specialty examinations as well as Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist.

Health care professional and respiratory technicians work with respiratory therapists to create treatment plans and carry them out. Depending on the training received, Respiratory Therapy graduates can look forward to becoming respiratory therapists, respiratory therapy technicians, pulmonary function technologists, or neonatal-pediatric specialists.
