To coincide with the online publication of “How to Feed Your Family a Healthy Balanced Diet” – a non fiction title that provides useful information on quick healthy recipes – webooks.co.uk has prepared a useful little guide to show you how easy it can be to eat healthily for breakfast and dinner.
With an ever increasing number fast-paced world, food manufacturers have attempted to meet the demand for pre-packed healthy foods. This sudden concern in healthy eating has spawned hundreds of products we once weren’t familiar with, and perhaps not bothered about – low-calorie shakes, smoothies, organic products, low-fat foods, low-salt - where does it end?
I have a little secret…it ends at home.
Breakfast
Breakfast can sometimes be boring if you restrict yourself to just toast and cereal. If you’re a cereal lover, make sure you read the sugar and salt content on the side of the box before buying. Generally, anything frosted or coated with chocolate are ones to avoid.
How about adding some fruit to your breakfast? Try chopping up fruit and adding it to your cereal, mixing it with yoghurt or eat it on the way to work.
Here’s something a little different – cake. Yes that right, the achilles heel for dieting men and women around the world is actually a good alternative for breakfast. Our European friends have been doing it for years – bran loaf, rock buns, fruit muffins, carrot cake – all do the trick and go well with croissants and jam. Just make sure you don’t “accidentally” include that chocolate caterpillar cake in your breakfast diet.
Dinner
Sweet and sour chicken, shepherd’s pie, chilli con carne, cider pork sausages and an old English favourite, chicken curry – all these dishes are easy to make and can be healthy. We’re going to take a look at the arch nemesis of healthy eating - a quick healthy recipe for chips (or fries). For this recipe, you can use either white potatoes or sweet potatoes.
What you need:
2-3 sweet/white potatoes
Olive Oil
Before you do anything, wash the potatoes under a tap, then start peeling and chop into whatever shapes you like. If you want, you can boil the potatoes until they are just turning soft before prepping them for the oven. Preheat the oven at around 190C, drizzle some olive oil onto a baking tray and place in the oven for around 5 minutes. Be sure not to drench the chips in oil, as this will defeat the object of this task! Next, place your potatoes on the tray and cook for around 15-20 minutes until they are golden. Voila! You can healthy chips without putting in too much effort.
