Contributed by bizcom on Tuesday, January 31 @ 17:48:24 EST

Dubai first Arab city to hold such a major forum in the region

The local organising committee of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) 9th Special Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum 2006 (4th to 9th February) and associated meetings met at the Police Academy yesterday (30th January) in Dubai to go over the arrangements for the forthcoming meetings.

The meeting was attended by General Dhahi Khalfan Tameem, Commander in Chief of Dubai Police, H.E. Dr. Hamad Al Midfaa, Minister of Health, Chairman of the FEA Board, H.E. Brigadier Saeed Matar Bin Bleila Director, Naturalization and Residency Administration, Dubai, H.E. Matar M. Al Tayer, Director Roads & Transport Authority and Dr. Mohamed Bin Fahad, Chairman and General Co-ordinator of Zayed Prize.

The event being organised under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai is one of the most important events in the region where issues such as chemicals management, energy and tourism will form part of a broad spectrum of environmental issues discussed.

The ministerial-level discussions from February 7-9, 2006 will address energy and environment, tourism and environment, chemicals and environment, and environment governance including issues of relevance to the outcome of the 2005 World Summit of the United Nations.

In recent years, the UAE has made considerable progress in environmental protection and waste management. The National Environment Day being organized in the UAE is now a well-established event that brings to focus the attention of the government, the corporate sector and the general public on matters of environmental concern. Thus it is only natural that the event is being organized in the UAE.

Additionally, inter-governmental organizations, specially-invited companies from the private sector, the international Press, civil societies and NGO’s are also expected to be informed about the possible benefits from experiencing these new and environmentally clean technologies.
