ROCHESTER, Mich.—Mother’s Day is a holiday with a long and widely unknown history in the United States. Most countries celebrate their own version of Mother’s day, but in the United States, Mother’s Day started a little differently. In the late 1800’s, Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of the poor health conditions in her community, and called it “Mother’s Work Day.” She wanted to bring attention to the severely insufficient sanitation conditions that most people were forced to work in. Her philosophy was that mothers would have the best and strongest voice for this particular issue.

In 1905, Anna Jarvis passed away, and her daughter, also named Anna, wanted to memorialize the life’s work of her mother, and began to lobby prominent business men and politicians to create a national day to honor mothers. In 1908, Anna put together a day to honor mothers at her church in West Virginia, and in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a bill officially recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday. Since that time, Mother’s Day has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, make phone calls, and give gifts.

The Red Hat Society members cherish Mother’s Day, as most members are mothers themselves. Mother’s day is the perfect time to give back to the Red Hat mother, because the Red Hat mother is deserving of recognition for all of the motherly duties she fulfilled throughout her life. The Red Hat society member’s belief is that for all the years of hard work they put in earlier in life, it is time to lighten up and not be so serious. Helping a Red Hat Society member and mother achieve this should be simple on Mother’s Day; get her a gift that can help her fulfill this goal!
