Consumer Electronics:

E stores Vs Offline Supermarkets

Contributed by sarika on Friday, March 07 @ 18:43:49 EST

Latest IAMAI (Internet and Mobile Association of India) report reveals that consumers need much more than a mere comfortable online shopping experience in present times.

With iconic Marks & Spencers of the world vying to tie up with country's most valued Reliance industries to flood the Indian lands with their franchisees, how much chance do their counterparts stand in luring the same segment of consumers online?? Factors like prices, free shipping, faster delivery and even warranty policy are not enough to make consumers buy from e-stores, in an effective way.

The irony, however is that the decimal of online shopping portals is on a rise. New business models are emerging. Instead of arming up against the small traders, big corporate are joining hands with them in order to leverage on their business skills. In return, small players are promised exposure and consumer reach, which they indeed do receive.

With so much happening in the very enterprising online retail industry, certain lacunae are still occupying some places. Latest IAMAI (Internet and Mobile Association of India) report reveals that consumers need much more than a mere comfortable online shopping experience in present times. Consumers migrate where they find personalized attention. They stay where they find security. This is what the figures reveal:

Therefore we see that among the 55 million Internet Users in India, 45% still fail to loosen their pockets even though they regularly visit these e-marts. 55% are active shoppers and the rest are only window shoppers! The reason, as clearly stated is the lack of 'trust' and 'security’.

Online security measures continue to be a major concern among the vast community of online shopoholics. With the multitude of identity thefts on a rise, people fearing to use plastic money for their transactions cannot be ignored. However, some portals like Retails Direct do employ 256 BIT security encryptions that ensure stringent validation process, keeping the consumer's personal data under safe protection. Rediff has included Trust.e privacy policy whereas few others talk about Veri sign site securities. The question is how many stores savor such measures to protect their customer’s financial information.

Therefore, the need of the hour is to have more and more online stores employing such measures to render higher levels of satisfactions to the customer. For there is still a massive pool of potential customers that needs to be tapped to convert the present online retail outlets into bustling supermarkets.
