Cyclone Funa left the northern part of Vanuatu devastated. Schools were particularly affected. They had little or nothing to begin with, now have nothing left. They need your help.
Cyclone Funa devastated the remote Banks Islands, in January, the most northern and forgotten islands of the Vanuatu archipelago. By late February the Vanuatu Government had allocated funding for support, but still needed direction as to how to distribute such funds (or so they say).
A phone call discovered how the children of the communities are affected. Gone are the food crops to fill their stomachs before school. Gone are windows in their homes and school. Gone are the exercise books and badly needed resources. Soaked by the driving wind and rain.
Close to 1000 people are having difficulty finding enough to eat. 32 cases of diarrhorea and 24 cases of influenza have been reported to date, following the Funa, due to poor quality of water and malnutrition.
What do the smiling faces want, in this the Happiest County on Earth? Just to be at school learning. Dreaming of a future as a nurse, mechanic, carpenter or a school teacher.
“The government does little to assist these people,” Prime Minister Lini admitted when he visited the area. “Sometimes all that is needed is only $US500 to bring a classroom into use”. That was before Funa
To get beyond a basic primary education requires 12 year-olds to leave the care of their community in these remote islands and enter boarding schools. Far from home on different islands, with different communal groups. There is no such thing in this tax-haven as free education and their society usually pays the primary school fees with coconuts, manioc, (local vegetable), or firewood.
YouMe Support Foundation (http://youmesupport.org) has these children and their families at its heart. YouMe Support Foundation is sending in bags of rice, paper, pens, books to read and books to write in.
