Do you know that Spanish speakers currently represent a US$13 trillion marketplace, according the most reliable estimates?
Here are some other demographics about the Spanish language: It is spoken by 500 million people; it is the 3rd language of the world after Mandarin Chinese and English (number of people); it is the 3rd language of the world (number of countries where it is official language); Spanish is the mother tongue of approximately 350 million people in 21 countries; there are more than 40 million students of Spanish in the world; Spanish is the second most used language in international communication; the Hispanic population in the United States has grown by 60 per cent in just one decade; and at present there are 40 million Hispanics, representing 12.5 per cent of the total population.

If you are planning a market development strategy, you can't ignore the ever growing Spanish market. After English, Spanish is probably the most useful second language for business. There are billions of Spanish speaking people who do not understand English at all and there are hundreds of millions who understand it only partially.
To receive some expert advice, I spoke with Peter LeSar, Founder and CEO of iSpeak (www.ispeak.net) about Spanish translation in regard to market access, since iSpeak has been specializing in Spanish translation since 1998 and has serviced clients from small businesses to corporate to government entities. “Our customers want to get their message across clearly and correctly, without incurring a ridiculously high cash outlay,” Peter told me. “At iSpeak, we have established ourselves by simply providing an effective, product at prices much lower than larger services can offer. This can only be achieved by a qualified, breathing team of translators, editors, quality assurance and technical specialists. I can’t tell you how many times a client has come to us after wasting a huge amount of money, time and patience on ineffectual translation software or an under qualified friend or relative.”
“You need a consistent Spanish translation, usually done in International Spanish - that end users trust and respect throughout your business operations in order to succeed, and this includes updates in materials and presentations over time,” Peter explained. Once we understand the Spanish translation that works for our client, we build a customized translation database for them, which we then use for everything we do. This serves three major purposes, it ensures quality and consistency, saves the client money on the translation of repeated text and phrases and takes a lot of pressure off of a client’s in-house approval team.
Once we established the basic parameters for entering the Spanish-speaking market, I asked Peter how a Web-based business could begin, using our previous website model. In response, Peter told me about his new Spanish Ecommerce Package, which is designed to fulfill this need.
iSpeak has developed a turnkey solution to help clients make the initial transition to the Spanish-speaking markets more smoothly. Features include websites that are translated in the original code (for immediate posting), site optimization for Spanish search-engine placement, shopping carts in Spanish, and Merchant Accounts with multicurrency payment capability. He stated that options such as call-center support and multilingual chats are being considered as well. Again the keys are consistency and cost effectiveness.
As you can see, care is needed in relation to your Spanish translation and its functionality in the Spanish-speaking marketplace. This seemingly simple task has defeated and bankrupted numerous contenders who did not understand the secret of a correct translation.
Is obtaining a comprehensive Spanish translation worth the effort? If you know how many zeros there are in $13 trillion, you will probably say, “Yes!”
