(Little Rock) – Radio’s “Summer Termination Season” has ended for another year. Traditionally, American commercial radio stations make hiring and firing decisions by mid summer with the aim of making changes prior to the beginning of the fall ratings period.
“Think of it as the “new fall lineup” for Radio,” says Corey Deitz. Deitz is the Radio Guide at About.com and the author of “The Cash Cage”, a book which reveals the inner workings of commercial radio.

American deejays and talk show hosts live and die by how many people listen to their shows and Arbitron’s four-times-a-year ratings survey is the last word on the cumulative results. Arbitron is the primary company responsible for measuring radio listenership in the United States.

This year, the summer Arbitron rating period officially ends on September 22 and the fall ratings period runs from September 23 until December 15.

“If you’re an out-of-work DJ and you don’t find a job by mid-September, you’ll most likely have a long winter. The next door of opportunity doesn’t occur until late January and early February,” says Deitz.
