The fluid handling pump market in China has expanded 17.3 percent a year during the last five years and reached ¥38.1 billion in 2006. Demand is projected to increase 10.5 percent per annum through 2011 to ¥62.9 billion.
Gains will be driven by strong growth in pump-using industries in China, such as process manufacturing, public utilities and resource extraction.

The utilities segment is expected to post double-digit annual gains through 2011, benefiting from a large and increasing population, and further industrialization and economic expansion, which generate high demand for power and water from residential, commercial and industrial markets. In addition, the Chinese government’s “Go West” strategy will boost utility pump demand in China’s relatively underdeveloped western regions.

Process manufacturing to remain largest, fastest growing market
The process manufacturing market will continue to be the largest consumer of pumps in the Chinese economy due to the wide range of applications and significant fluid handling requirements in many of these industries. In addition, this market is expected to exhibit the fastest growth in pump demand through 2011, benefiting from expanding output in most process industries, with particularly strong gains in primary metal production. Gains will be bolstered by the continued expansion of after market prospects among process manufacturers, particularly in the chemical, primary metal, pulp and paper, and petroleum refining industries, which handle large volumes of harsh fluids. After market demand will also be supported by increasingly stringent energy efficiency and environmental protection requirements in China.

Specialty pumps to exhibit most rapid growth
Specialty pumps such as corrosion resistant types will see the fastest demand increases. Gains will be driven by the robust outlook for most process manufacturing industries in China, which are important consumers of these pumps, and stricter efficiency and safety requirements within these industries. Technological innovations will also promote the use of specialty pumps, but will somewhat dampen growth in replacement demand due to associated improvements in durability. Centrifugal pumps will remain the most commonly used pump design in China, benefiting from their ability to carry a wide range of flow pressure, good load handling capability, effective handling of liquids with high solids content, and relatively low maintenance costs. Technological innovations will further improve their versatility and also drive demand for centrifugal pumps.

Regional opportunities vary
The Central-East has traditionally seen the highest levels of pump sales in China. The region is also expected to be the fastest-growing regional market for pumps through 2011. Large shares of overall national manufacturing activity, fixed investment and construction expenditures will boost the economic outlook in the Central-East and sustain a vast pump market in this region. The expected expansion of the current high growth seen in the overall Chinese economy to the as yet underdeveloped rural and western areas of China will create significant opportunities for pump suppliers.
